The story of our visit
So, I went there skeptical. Roscioli Caffè on Via dei Giubbonari is on every list of Rome's best maritzos, and honestly I'd always thought it was one of those overhyped things. But then doubt creeps in, and we ended up going anyway.
The maritozzo is good. Really good. The dough is soft, sweetness hits just right, the cream is generous and slightly buttery — all in all it works. I get why it makes the lists.
Except it's tiny. Genuinely tiny. And at 4,50€ that starts to sting. Then while we were there we found out the large maritozzo doesn't exist anymore — they ditched the regular size and only keep the mini. I'm not exactly sure why, they mentioned something about it, but bottom line: you pay nearly five euros for something that's gone in two bites.
We left the two of us with 10 euros and change in our pockets, and satisfaction at half-mast — not because of quality, which is there, but because of quantity. Removing the large maritozzo doesn't exactly sit with Roman tradition, let's say.
Would I go back? To try it again, sure, once is worth it. But with adjusted expectations.
